A frayed starter cord is usually the reason for the rope’s stiffness in most cases, and you can fix it by opening the recoil start assembly and replacing it entirely. If the rope retracts a part of its length, solve the problem by increasing the number of turns of the reel pull starter by one turn or two. A stiff starter rope on a generator can result from a frayed cord, a hydrolocked engine, a seized piston, or a damaged flywheel.

The First Thing You Can Do Is To Remove The Starter From The Generator To Gain Access To The Recoil Spring As Well As The Pulley.

Pull about half of the rope back towards the inside of the pulley. If the rope is not retracting along its entire length, your spring is decompressed, i.e. Plug in a light, turn on the generator breaker or switch and start the motor.

If It Already Has An Electric Start Switch, Use That In The Meantime.

I took the pull start assembly off, and it pulled fine. Place the rope through the hole in the pulley inside the housing that holds the rope onto it during retraction. Did it get any easier?

Then place that end inside the groove that’s cut out on the lip of the starter cup. Remove the recoil housing cap. Materials needed to fix a generator rope.

At Times, This Rope May Not Be In Good Shape Making It Difficult To Operate The Generator.

Give the rope a counterclockwise pull and you should have your generator fired up in a second or two. Then, get your generator ready to run (choke engaged, fuel valve open, etc.). Remove the generator’s starter to access the rope inside it.

Unscrew The Cap That Holds The Pulley To The Recoil Starter Housing.

Wrap the cord around the starter cup in a clockwise manner and leave yourself something to grab onto. Pull plug, pull rope, put plug back in and go. Subsequently, question is, how do you fix a generator?
